Why Having a Clean Church Matters for Church Members

Don't overlook the importance of a clean building. Let BLOOM take care of the building while you care for the church.

For a believer, there is nothing quite like being in church on Sunday. Catching up with and praying for friends, singing together in unison, listening to the Word of God, and meeting the needs of others are all vital for a healthy church. People need other people - plain and simple.

But when the service is done the bathrooms won't clean themselves. Someone has to take out the trash, sanitize surfaces, and mop the floors. Often churches have a limited budget for cleaning, and budgets are what they are.

The question I want you to think about today is -- Does it matter who cleans your church? I think it does, and I'll tell you why a little later. For now, let's talk about why a clean church is so important.

Cleanliness affects your staff and your members

We all know how much church staff does to take care of the flock. They often work tirelessly to meet needs, make visits, send cards and notes, prepare sermons and lessons, pray, counsel, talk... the list goes on and on. It's truly a job that's never done.

Imagine on top of this list also dealing with complaints of a dirty building. If your church is paying someone to clean, these complaints should be very rare. Unfortunately, that isn't always the case. Yes, paid cleaners make the occasional mistake - they are human after all. But they should be doing an excellent job nearly all of the time.

"Problems with cleanliness can add administrative problems and tasks that you just don't have time for."

At-risk members of your congregation

Another thing to consider are the risks to vulnerable people in your congregation. Those that are elderly or have low immune responses due to underlying conditions or perhaps chemo, are especially at risk of becoming ill. It's important for every member to be in attendance as often as is possible, but when flu season hits, it can spread like wildfire.

A good cleaning company who is invested in the health of your church will be proactive to stop the spread of germs to help keep your congregation healthy. High traffic areas and touchpoints such as light switches and door handles need extra attention in order to keep them sanitary.

Cleanliness also affects the opinions of visitors

Whether visitors are dropping off a baby at the nursery or heading to the restroom before service begins, the state of your facility can leave a lasting impression. A building that is in disarray can communicate that the church staff is unorganized and inattentive. This may even have visitors wondering if the needs of the body are looked after if no one is taking the time to refill the toilet paper.

An attentive cleaning company can save you money

Not too long ago, we took on a wonderful local church as their new cleaning crew. They have a beautiful building, but there were some things that had been neglected by the previous cleaners. It was very unfortunate since most of the facility had been newly renovated and added onto.

One area in particular need was a set of bathrooms. The staff had resigned to having to change the toilets because they seemed too stained to keep. However, I asked if we could try to save them since they weren't very old at all. It took a little time, patience, and elbow grease, but we were able to get them looking new again. We saved that church upwards of $1000, and they still look great to this day.

All that to say, that having a company who is aligned with your values and knows that every tithed dollar matters, makes all the difference. A facility that is cared for will last and major repairs can even be prevented in some cases. That means that more money can be allocated for work outside of the building.
